Lost skills and prioritizing the panicked articles...
The Zombie Apocalypse has come, the Aliens have used an EMP , climate change has caused the world to be swim only...we no longer have the ease of computers or electricity. Okay, not an alarmist or prepper..that's a level of dedication I don't have! The kid figured out how to use a citation generator and I started the lecture "Kid, you have to know how to.." it sort of ended while I tried to figured out why, exactly. In the unlikely event that computers were no longer capable of handling the task, then in all likelyhood computers themselves are gone. Hence, an apocalypse as my litmus test. If we loose computers/electricity, will this skill still be relevant in a recovering world? Can he use this knowledg to feed or defend himself? Will it make his life happier or easier?
The next time I read an article or blog post about something we're no longer teaching our kids, this will be what I think about...so when a crazy lady comments "After this place is a waterworld, will it matter?" ... that'll be me. Now, off to teach kid how to build an ark, track a deer, strart a fire, grow his own penicillin....
